I have an intermittent problem with my PC. Every five or so bootups I get fans and case lights, but no POST. I can get it to boot by doing a manual BIOS reset from the button on the motherboard. The motherboard is seven years old, perhaps the battery is on its way out?

Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Never had that myself. My initial thought was cmos battery also.

A quick google search seems to favour a motherboard fault with the PSU a close second. If its frequent enough to try removing other hardware ( gfx, ram, roms, usbs etc ) for testing, if it works they seem to say its not the power supply.

Some suggestions from various random discussion boards :

'Strip the system to only one memory stick (or two if pairs are required) and one HD. No dvd or anything else. If the system is unstable with just this then I would suspect the board. If the board remains stable (in your case posts on every start) then I would introduce each item one at a time until the problem presents itself again.'

'If it starts consistently without the graphics card (can usually tell by the disk light), it's probably either a graphics card fault or a PSU fault. If it doesn't, it's less likely to be a PSU fault.
If it starts consistently without one or more drives, it's probably either a drive short or a PSU fault. If it doesn't, it's less likely to be a PSU fault.
If it beeps consistently with the RAM removed, it's probably not a short and more likely to be a motherboard fault.'

'Make sure everything is seated properly as that was what was wrong with mine.'

When the battery is running low the bios will set to default settings. A new battery is a start, usually a button jobby.

The intermittent nature for me sort of rules out hardware. There are no CMOS audio alarms related to any hardware failures.

Thats what seemed to be being suggested.

Easiest way must be a windows re-install if you suspect software then or motherboard drivers ?
